What is the difference between a "tang/pin" buckle and the "deployant/folding clasp" buckle?

Posted on May 14, 2016 by Elliot Lazarus

What is the difference between a "tang/pin" buckle and the "deployant/folding clasp" buckle?

The Tang buckle is similar to a traditional men's belt buckle. It will often leave a crease in the strap, but it is closer to the original style of buckle used by the members of the Italian Navy.

The deployant, or folding clasp, will not leave as much of a mark in the strap and it less original. It also has a slight tendency to make the strap fit a bit loose, and so if you are struggling to keep your Panerai on in the first place either skip the deployant or hit the gym.

If you use the OEM (Panerai) deployant, you'll need to buy a strap that's specifically designed for use with the deployant (regular straps as well as  aftermarket straps are too thick to fit through the slot in the deployant buckle). The OEM deployant straps are thinner at the buckle end to accommodate the deployant.

So make sure you read the product description when purchasing a strap.  If it says "for a Tang Buckle" or "sewn in buckle" it cannot be used with a deployant.  One more thing to clear up.  A Deployant strap can be used on a tang buckle, but a tang strap cannot be used on a Deployant buckle.

The Panerai Enthusiast...a breed apart

Posted on March 06, 2016 by Elliot Lazarus

I remember when I saw my first Panerai watch at my local dealer.  I thought "No Way" it is too big."  Then 3 weeks later I was wearing my first one as I delved into the world of Panerai watches and history.

I saw this article on the World Tempus website about Panerai Enthusiasts and couldn't help but think how true this is.....

Difference between Tang and Deployant buckles

Posted on March 05, 2016 by Elliot Lazarus

Straps are usually 4 to 5mm thick at the watch case and on a deployant strap they get thinner, down to 2mm at the buckle so they can fit in the slot.  A watch with a Deployant clasp goes on like a bracelet.

A strap for a regular Tang buckle stays pretty much the same thickness throughout. Our straps made with a sewn in buckle run 4.2 to 4.5mm thick. Our Pre-V by Mario Paci Straps are 3mm thick...the same thickness as those made back in 1993 for the OEM Straps.  A Tang buckle goes on like the buckle on your belt for your trousers.

You can use a deployant strap on a tang buckle but you cannot use a regular thickness strap (made for a Tang buckle) on a deployant buckle.
